The IPIFF Guide on Good Hygiene Practices for European Union (EU) producers of insects as food and feed has been updated in November 2022 with its ninth version.
The IPIFF Secretariat submitted the latest updated version to the European Commission services, in view of its possible future recognition as ‘EU official Guide for the insect sector’.
The document was endorsed by the European Commission PAFF ‘Biological safety of the food chain’ Committee and by the PAFF Committee responsible for ‘animal nutrition’ respectively on October 6th and November 14th 2022.
Scope of the Guide
- The production of insects destined to human consumption (e.g. whole insects and processed insect meals including when incorporated into processed products, or parts of insects and their derived products);
- The production of insects destined to animal feed for food-producing animals, including terrestrial livestock (e.g. poultry and pig species), aquaculture or pet food animals.
It encompasses all production steps, from the feeding of the insects, their breeding, the killing and processing steps, storage or transport activities, up to the final delivery of the product to consumers or feed manufacturers. Its use is voluntary, based on the full-self responsibility of the insect producer.
